Discovery of Double-ring Structure in the Supernova Remnant N103B: Evidence for Bipolar Winds from a Type Ia Supernova Progenitor

چکیده

Abstract The geometric structure of supernova remnants (SNR) provides a clue to unveiling the pre-explosion evolution their progenitors. Here we present an X-ray study N103B (0509–68.7), Type Ia SNR in Large Magellanic Cloud, that is known be interacting with dense circumstellar matter (CSM). Applying our novel method for feature extraction deep Chandra observations, have successfully resolved CSM, Fe-rich ejecta, and intermediate-mass element (IME) ejecta components, revealed each spatial distributions. Remarkably, IME component exhibits double-ring structure, implying expands into hourglass-shape cavity thus forms bipolar bubbles ejecta. This interpretation supported by more quantitative spectroscopy reveals clear bimodality distribution ionization state These observational results can naturally explained if progenitor binary system had formed CSM torus on orbital plane prior explosion, providing further evidence originates from single-degenerate progenitor.

Double Degenerates from the Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey (spy)

Close binary systems consisting of two white dwarfs (double degenerates – DDs) are considered possible progenitors of supernovae type Ia. The SPY project (Napiwotzki et al., these proceedings) surveys a large sample of white dwarfs for radial velocity (RV) variations. DDs are the result of close binary evolution, but the theoretical modeling of this evolution depends heavily on some not well kn...

The Type Ia Supernova

We present the rst measurement of the rate of Type Ia super-novae at high redshift. The result is derived using a large subset of data from the Supernova Cosmology Project as described in more detail at this meeting by Perlmutter et al. (1996). We present our methods for estimating the numbers of galaxies and the number of solar luminosities to which the survey is sensitive, the supernova detec...

Type-Ia Supernova Rates and the Progenitor Problem: A Review

The identity of the progenitor systems of type-Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is a major unsolved problem in astrophysics. SN Ia rates are providing some striking clues. We review the basics of SN rate measurement, preach about some sins of SN rate measurement and analysis, and illustrate one of these sins with an analogy about Martian scientists. We review the recent progress in measuring SN Ia rates ...

KPD 1930 + 2752 – a candidate Type Ia supernova progenitor

We present spectra of the pulsating sdB star KPD 1930+2752 which confirm that this star is a binary. The radial velocities measured from the Hα and HeI 6678Å spectral lines vary sinusoidally with the same period (2 h 17 m) as the ellipsoidal variability seen byBilì eres et al. (2000). The amplitude of the orbital motion (349.3±2.7 km s −1) combined with the canonical mass for sdB stars (0.5M ⊙)...

The Type Ia Supernova Rate

We explore the idea that the Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) rate is made up of two components: a prompt piece that is proportional to the star formation rate (SFR) and an extended piece that is proportional to the total stellar mass. We fit the parameters of this model to the local observations of Mannucci and collaborators and then study its impact on three important problems. On cosmic scales, t...
